CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

When the twins came home crying, and Shoshana was distressed, Naomi asked what happened, and Shoshana told her mother about the girls and the candy and the salesman.

“I can’t tell your father. If I do he’ll be furious at all of you, but especially at Shoshana. You must promise me never to do anything so reckless again,” Naomi pleaded.

“But we didn’t do anything. We just took candy . . .” Bluma said.

“That was reckless. I’ve told you girls time and again that you must never talk to strangers. Now, you must promise me that you won’t do it again.”

“I promise, Mama,” Perle said.

“I promise too,” Bluma said.

“And as for you, Shoshana, you must never leave the girls alone like that. Anything could happen. I shiver to think,” Naomi said.

“Yes, Mama. It was a mistake. I promise I won’t do it again.”

“All right, all of you go and get cleaned up for dinner. Your father will be home very soon,” Naomi said.

Herschel walked into the house in a sour mood. He slammed the door behind him and glared at Naomi. “Frieda had some interesting information for me today,” he said.

Naomi was stunned and trying to hide her trembling hands in her apron pockets, but for a moment she was transported back to the day she had run into Frieda before meeting with Eli. Could she have followed me? Did she see me with Eli? Does she know? I hate her and her meddling. She is always trying to destroy me, always putting her nose where it doesn’t belong. She’s a yenta, a busybody. What will happen to me? What will happen to Eli? Naomi took a breath and tried to calm herself, and asked, “Information? What kind of information?”

“Is there anything you want to tell me about a man?” Herschel said.

Naomi’s face turned white, and a bead of sweat formed on her brow. “A man?” she asked, trying to sound as calm as possible.

Herschel let out a sigh of disappointment. “Frieda was in town today. She saw something happen with the twins and a salesman. Perhaps Shoshana is not mature enough to take the girls to the market with her.” Then he proceeded to tell Naomi what happened. But she already knew.

“Shoshana,” Herschel called. “Get in here right now.”

Shoshana came out of her room and walked into the kitchen. “Yes, Papa,” she said in a soft voice.

“You are in trouble, young lady. You made a terrible mistake today.” He reprimanded Shoshana until she cried.
